Traceroute is a network diagnostic tool used to track the path taken by a packet on an IP network from source to destination. Traceroute also records the time taken for each hop the packet makes during its route to the destination.
To guarantee the accuracy of response times, each hop is queried multiple times (usually three times) to measure the response of that particular hop. Traceroute uses Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo packets with a Time To Live (TTL) value decremented by 1 (-1) per hop in the path. Every hop that handles the packet subtracts ‘1’ from the packet’s TTL. If the TTL reaches zero, the packet has expired and is discarded. Traceroute depends on the common router practice of sending an ICMP time-exceeded message back to the sender when the TTL expires.
Traceroute is useful in determining response delays and routing loops in a network pathway across packet-switched nodes. It will helps locate points of failure encountered while in route to a specific destination.
Traceroute is something all competent IT professionals are aware of for network troubleshooting and diagnostics. However, most other employees will never need to use or understand this tool. For cybersecurity recommendations, continue reading to find our minimum essential security measures.
