Information System (IS)

12th March 2026 | Cybrary Information System (IS)

Information Systems (IS) are the organized collection, processing, maintenance, transmission, and dissemination of information in accordance with defined procedures, whether automated or manual. In simple terms, an Information System includes the people, processes, technologies, and data that work together to support business operations, communication, and decision making.

Information Systems can be automated, like cloud platforms, databases, business software, and ticketing systems, or manual, like paper files, forms, and documented workflows. What makes them an Information System is not just the technology, but the structured way information is handled and managed.

Information Systems typically include several key elements:

  • People: The users, administrators, managers, and support staff who interact with the system
  • Processes: The rules and procedures for handling information
  • Technology: Hardware, software, networks, and tools used to manage data
  • Data: The information being collected, stored, processed, or shared

An Information System is only effective when these parts work together in a consistent and secure way.

What Information Systems Mean for SMBs

For small and medium sized businesses, Information Systems are the foundation of daily operations. They include the tools and workflows used to run the business, such as email, accounting software, file storage, CRMs, payroll platforms, and customer support systems.

If these systems are not well managed, the business can face downtime, lost data, poor decisions, security incidents, and compliance problems. Even simple failures, like an email outage, corrupted spreadsheet, or inaccessible customer database, can disrupt operations.

In practical terms, SMBs should:

  • Identify which systems are critical to business operations
  • Document how information is collected, stored, and shared
  • Apply security controls to protect business data
  • Back up important systems and test recovery procedures
  • Train employees to use systems properly and securely

What Information Systems Mean for MSPs

For Managed Service Providers, Information Systems are both internal business tools and the client systems they support, secure, and maintain. MSPs rely on their own systems for ticketing, documentation, remote monitoring, billing, communications, and service delivery. At the same time, they are often responsible for helping clients manage and protect their Information Systems.

Because MSPs work across many environments, they must ensure those systems remain secure, reliable, and properly maintained. A weakness in one system, whether internal or client facing, can affect service quality, data protection, and customer trust.

In practice, MSPs must:

  • Manage and secure their own operational systems
  • Support the availability and protection of client Information Systems
  • Document configurations, procedures, and changes
  • Monitor systems for outages, misconfigurations, or threats
  • Help clients understand which systems are critical and how to protect them

Bottom Line

Information Systems are the structured combination of people, processes, technology, and data used to manage and share information.

For SMBs, they support the day to day functions that keep the business running.
For MSPs, they are both the systems they depend on internally and the systems they help protect and manage for clients.

Information Systems are not just about technology. They are about making sure information flows in a reliable, organized, and secure way so the business can operate effectively.
