A Randomization Function is an algorithm or procedure that implements a randomly chosen function between two specific sets, suitable for use in a randomized algorithm. Randomizing functions are used to turn algorithms that have good expected performance for random inputs, into algorithms that have the same performance for any input.
Being able to generate a truly unpredictable random number is important in a number of ways. Generating random numbers for gambling or Powerball out of a set of possible options, as is creating randomness in computer gaming. However, perhaps one of the most important areas in which truly random numbers are needed is in cryptography. Modern cryptography is based upon the inability to determine the input that created an encrypted output file. Without randomness, this would not be possible (This author admits there is much more to this than what I’m reporting. Consider this a gross over-simplification).
These random numbers are essential for secure encryption, whether you’re encrypting your own files or just using an HTTPS website on the Internet. (Source: HowtoGeek.com).
The vast majority of businesses don’t need to know how randomization functions work, but you should know that they are vital to the functioning of cryptography, privacy, eCommerce, and even your online browsing to most websites today.
While cryptography and truly random numbers are vital to cybersecurity programs and our privacy, there are many other more basic topics businesses must address in building a robust security program.
