Microsegmentation

12th August 2025 | Cybrary Microsegmentation

Microsegmentation is a security technique that divides a network into smaller, isolated zones down to the application or workload level. Each segment has its own access controls and policies, limiting lateral movement of attackers if they breach one part of the system. It’s like building secure “rooms” inside a building instead of leaving it open with only one main lock at the door.

What it means to SMBs (Small and Medium-Sized Businesses):

  • Stronger Security: Limits the spread of ransomware, malware, or insider threats across the entire network.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Helps meet industry regulations by isolating sensitive data and systems.
  • Reduced Attack Surface: Even if one area is compromised, other critical systems remain protected.
  • Granular Control: Businesses can set who or what can access each segment, improving data privacy.

What it means to MSPs (Managed Service Providers):

  • Enhanced Service Offering: Provides a higher level of protection to clients, differentiating MSP services.
  • Incident Containment: Faster and easier to isolate and remediate threats within a client’s environment.
  • Trust & Retention: Demonstrates proactive, advanced security measures, strengthening client confidence.
  • Scalability: Policies can be centrally managed and applied across multiple clients efficiently.
