RAM Disk

A RAM Disk is Random Access Memory (RAM) that has been adjusted to simulate a disk drive. You can access data on a RAM disk as you’d access data on a ‘hard disk’ (hard drive). RAM disks, however, are approximately a thousand times faster than hard disk drives. These are useful for applications that require frequent memory access.

It’s important to note RAM disks lose their contents once the device is turned off. To use a RAM disk you need to copy files from a real hard drive at the beginning of the session and then copy the files back to the hard disk before you turn the computer off. If there is a power failure, all data on the RAM disk drive will be lost, although, some RAM disks come with a battery backup to make them more functional.

What does this mean for an SMB?

Your organization needs to supply users with enough RAM to run the specific programs and applications needed in your business. The amount of RAM needed is based upon the type of work you are doing. Some businesses need more ram than others (for example video and digital image processing requires enormous amounts of RAM). When purchasing a new computer you have options for how much memory you will receive – typically 2GB, 4GB, or 16 GB (with more available for specialized machines). Most low-end computers come with 4GB memory today, while higher-end machines have 8GB or 16GB of RAM standard. There are roundabout ways to improve your storage performance without purchasing a new device. There are a few free, open-source software solutions that make your PC able to convert system memory (hard drive) into usable storage (RAM) known as a RAM Disk, essentially turning some of your PC’s RAM into a super-fast storage drive. Looking into solutions like this for your business may not be the worst idea!
